Vic lawmakers look to rein in workplace surveillance

Victorian workers should be protected under law from intrusive workplace surveillance, a state inquiry has found after hearing of a surge in pervasive technologies like keylogging, tracking devices and artificial intelligence.

A parliamentary committee is calling for the new laws after hearing evidence of an expansion in cheap invasive surveillance technologies that have spilled into homes through remote work.

In one instance, the committee heard evidence that the Commonwealth Bank is now tracking the precise location of workers with a phone app, and asking some staff to apply for leave when away from their desks or appear unproductive.
