Telstra customers will be able to send and receive text messages outside mobile coverage areas after the telco partnered with Elon Musk-owned SpaceX to send the texts via its low-Earth orbit satellites.
The new capability was launched on Tuesday and comes ahead of the government mandating better mobile connectivity through satellites from 2027, including calls and texts.
Telstra also beats out Optus with the first commercial deployment of a satellite to mobile text messaging product, after the Singaporean-owned telco group missed its planned launch late last year.
