The European Union has launched a new International Digital Strategy with a commitment to promoting a rules-based global digital order and working with like-minded partners to offset a period of turbulence in trade relations with the US.
The European Commission’s vice-president for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy Henna Virkkunen launched the International Digital Strategy on Thursday.
The strategy commits EU members to partnering with like-minded countries around the world to build secure and trusted digital infrastructure across energy, transport, finance and health.
It has been launched at a time when the Trump administration has been highly critical of the European Commission introducing a swag of new rules aimed at reining in the power of US tech giants.

The US has threated to impose tariffs in retaliation for fines levied on these Big Tech companies.
Ms Virkkunen said the International Digital Strategy demonstrates the EU is “deeply committed to digital cooperation with our allies and partners,”.
“We are living through a profound digital revolution that is reshaping economies and societies worldwide,” she said.
“This is happening in a geopolitical landscape that is more challenging than ever before. In this environment, the EU is stepping forward as a stable and reliable partner.
“This strategy isn’t just about boosting our own competitiveness in key technologies like AI, quantum, cyber security or semiconductors at home, though that remains also a priority.
“It’s also about actively supporting the digital transition of our partners globally.
“Crucially, it reaffirms the EU’s unwavering commitment to building a rules-based global digital order, rooted firmly in our fundamental values.
No country or region can lead the technological revolution alone, said Ms Virkkunen the most senior technology policy commissioner in European system of governance.
Other areas of cooperation would include emerging technologies, digital governance that fosters social cohesion and protects democratic principles, cybersecurity and protecting children on online platforms.
