Former Australian Ambassador to the United States Arthur Sinodinos has been appointed chair of the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney, succeeding Mark Baillie, who served as its longest-running chair for 10 years.

Mr Sinodinos brings a wealth of political and diplomatic experience to the role, having been closely involved in Australia’s negotiations related to AUKUS, the Quad and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, as well as a long-serving senator for NSW and former Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science.

He is currently partner and chair of Australia Practice at The Asia Group, where he leads conversations about Australia’s role and relationships across the Indo-Pacific region.

USSC chief executive officer Dr Mike Green said Mr Sinodinos “has long been a friend of the USSC” and that to have him join as chair is “a real coup because there are few people better placed to speak to the nature of the US-Australia relationship in this current era”.

Speaking at the USSC Sydney International Strategy Forum last year, Mr Sinodinos said the economic and security architecture in the Asia-Pacific region is vital to US interests, and that “if it’s America first, it can’t be America only”.
