Drop in NSW agency cyber reports ‘mask’ issues: Auditor

Fewer government agencies are reporting to NSW’s cyber agency individually, potentially masking issues at a time when compliance with the Essential Eight cybersecurity controls remains low, the state’s auditor-general has found.

In its annual Cyber Insights report, the NSW Auditor-General found individual reports to Cyber Security NSW from the state’s 177 agencies reached a five-year low last year, dropping from 110 in 2023 to 66 in 2024.

“The number of agencies that report on their cyber security assessments to Cyber Security NSW does not reflect the actual number of agencies responsible for cyber security or that need to be compliant
with the Cyber Security Policy,” the report said.
