Finance takes control of Services Australia in MoG shake-up

Services Australia will move under the Department of Finance in a major Machinery of Government change that puts a central agency in charge of social security payments and service delivery policy for the first time.

Administrative Arrangements Orders signed off by Governor-General Sam Mostyn late last week reveal that the Department of Social Services (DSS) has been stripped of its responsibility for whole-of-government service delivery.

The shift is part of a renewed push by the Albanese government to improve frontline service delivery, and is expected to expose the agency to “new opportunities” in digital services and artificial intelligence.
