The Albanese government is facing growing calls to reveal its regulatory response to artificial intelligence that has been two years in the making, with the extended wait now risking Australia’s competitiveness as innovation-friendly countries move ahead.
That’s according to a handful of tech giants, industry bodies and researchers, which have all expressed their frustration with the “lack of clarity” from the government in submissions to the Productivity Commission’s inquiry into the five pillars of productivity.
The government has spent more than two years devising its policy response to the advent of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, kicking off the long-winding process in June 2023 and proposing 10 mandatory guardrails for AI in high-risk settings last September.
