Bunnings chides privacy rules that thwarted its facial recognition

Bunnings has claimed hard line interpretations of Australia’s privacy law are undermining the retail sector and is calling for reform after the regulator put a stop to its use of facial recognition technology.

The retail giant, which is still appealing the privacy watchdog’s finding from last year, said “overly prescriptive” interpretations risk making Australia’s privacy law unfair or unworkable amid the emergence of artificial intelligence and data-driven technologies.

An imbalance toward customer privacy in its interpretation also risks employee and customer safety as retail crime rates rise but stores opt not to counter with new technology like facial recognition, Bunnings said in its latest push for more tech friendly regulation.
