Nuclear still twice the cost of renewables, CSIRO finds

Renewables are the lowest cost new electricity generation technology in Australia, the national science agency has reaffirmed, while nuclear would be from two to six times as expensive.

The findings are in the CSIRO’s 2024-25 GenCost report released on Tuesday and reflect cost projections updated since the last initial report in December while also addressing arguments from nuclear advocates.

That initial report’s findings helped levy criticism on the federal Opposition’s energy plan ahead of the federal election.
