Research reprieve: Govt eases cap on international students

The federal government will allow an extra 25,000 international students to enrol in Australia next year in a boost to research heavy universities that rely on the foreign student revenue.

Public universities will vie for the extra spots by demonstrating student accommodation is available or by accepting more students from Southeast Asia.

The move was announced Monday by Education minister Jason Clare and will lift the National Planning Level to 295,000 while updating a controversial ministerial direction that had brought in tighter caps last year.
