Australia’s lone builder of a sovereign large language model has backed a wait and see approach to AI regulation as the Albanese government signals it will be months before its “precision” rules are unveiled.

Dave Lemphers, an entrepreneur developing Australia’s answer to OpenAI, said the government needs to take a “pragmatic” approach to regulation that supports early movers in the market.

“You first have to allow some level of practical execution and delivery to happen in the market, just so that we can actually understand what we’re dealing with,” he told Innovation Aus.com at the Tech Leaders summit this week.
