Gap analysis shows existing laws ‘inadequate’ for AI age


Australia’s existing regulations are “inadequate” to deal with the emerging risks from general-purpose AI models, according to a new study that surveyed dozens of experts in the field.

As the government searches out a “sensible, middle path” that could see it water down proposed AI rules, the new report from Australians for AI Safety reveals widespread gaps in the regulatory landscape that can only be addressed with an Australian AI Act.

The ‘AI legislation stress test’, released just hours before the productivity roundtable turns its attention to AI and innovation, draws on input from 64 AI and public policy experts from universities, law firms and AI labs.
