The head of the university sector’s peak body on Wednesday urged the government to follow other nations in strategically supporting place-based innovation to physically connect research institutions with industry.
It follows growing calls for Australian policy makers to mimic models like Germany’s Fraunhofer Institutes and the UK’s Catapult Centres, which embed translation researchers and shared infrastructure in dedicated facilities to lower barriers to industry led innovation.
“There are various ways of doing this in various other countries, but really starting to invest in those innovation precincts [is needed],” Universities Australia chair, Professor Carolyn Evans said Wednesday.
