AI Act needed to protect human rights: HRC

Australia urgently needs an AI Act and a dedicated regulator, the Australian Human Rights Commission is warning, two years after its landmark research with similar recommendations was ignored by the former government.

On Thursday, the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) urged the Albanese government to conduct a sweep of the current “patchwork” regulatory environment for AI before introducing dedicated legislation to fill the gaps.

“If Australia is to reap the benefits of AI, it must ensure the technology is developed and used ethically,” Australian Human Rights Commissioner Lorraine Finlay told InnovationAus.com.
