Ayres rules out copyright exemptions on data mining for AI

Industry minister Tim Ayres says there are no immediate plans to rework copyright rules to allow tech giants like Google and OpenAI to mine text and data to train AI models in Australia.

Senator Ayres made the comments on Wednesday, just hours after the Productivity Commission revealed it was examining whether a new ‘fair dealing’ exemption should be introduced for text and data mining (TDM).

In its interim report on harnessing data and digital technology, the Commission said it was clear the copyright regime was “not keeping pace with the rise of AI”, whether because it creates barriers for companies or is “too easily sidestepped”.
