‘Between minnow and whale’: Australia must crack biotech code


New Labor Senator Michelle Ananda-Rajah has urged federal parliament to lift its focus on solving the “mystery of the missing middle” holding back Australia’s world-class biotech sector.

In her first speech as a senator, the clinician-researcher and physician in infectious diseases founder-turned-politician said the world-class industry is one of the best chances of building a new knowledge economy “almost overnight”.

But she said that despite the country’s research prowess and 1,200 companies, including global giants like CSL and Cochlear, the country suffers from the same “mystery of the missing middle” afflicting other sectors.
