Biosecurity elevated to national mission as costs hit $25bn

Australia’s biosecurity defences will be bolstered under a new CSIRO mission, putting the fight against invasive species and diseases alongside national challenges like clean energy and national security.

The new Catalysing Australia’s Biosecurity (CAB) initiative has been in development for the last 18 months and launches on Tuesday with funding commitments of more than $55 million over six years.

This will add to the $1 billion allocated to biosecurity in the last federal budget, as the global biosecurity environment worsens under increasing trade.
