Call for AI inventories as tech sprawls across universities

Artificial intelligence is being deployed across NSW universities without central oversight, policies or strategies, leaving several institutions without a “complete understanding” of their use, a new audit has revealed.

Only six of the state’s 10 public universities are identifying and documenting all the AI tools they implement. But even then, many still lacked complete details like a responsible owner or testing guidance.

The inconsistent approach has triggered calls by the audit office for NSW universities to create central AI inventories, and draft official policies and strategies — measures the auditor general will review next year.
