Canva overtakes CSIRO for number of patent applications

Australia’s most valuable tech unicorn surpassed the national science agency as the country’s second most active patent applicant for the first time last year, new data reveals. The number one spot on the patent filing list was again taken by gambling giant Aristocrat.

Annual patents and trade marks data released by IP Australia last week shows software design startup Canva made 44 applications in 2024, compared with the CSIRO’s 37 applications.

It is the second year in a row the $49 billion company has filed more than 40 applications, and the first time since public reporting began that the CSIRO has dropped below 40 patent applications.
