Atlassian co-founder and chief executive Mike Cannon-Brookes has warned that regulating artificial intelligence “at such an early stage… seems crazy” and for governments to focus instead on the downstream upside of the technology.

In conversation with the Australian British Chamber of Commerce chief executive Ticky Fullerton at a special briefing at Sydney’s Tech Central on Wednesday, Mr Cannon-Brookes said that Australia has a “huge opportunity in… purely training AI.”

“We’re not going to build massive foundation models in Australia [but] we can use them. They have brought everybody in the world equal access,” he said.
