Data centres are bigger than a one-off foreign investment hit

Australia’s data centre opportunity is bigger than a one-off hit of foreign investment, but rather provides the digital infrastructure and expertise to help drive a new wave of local innovation, AirTrunk government lead Belinda Dennett told the National Tech Summit this week.

But the benefits for Australia will only be derived if planning and regulatory systems can keep up, she said.

The comments came as state and federal governments signaled greater support for data centre initiatives, but warned that the tech sector must do more to share the benefits of an AI-fueled digital infrastructure boom.
