Australian scientists and engineers will lose access to some of the world’s most powerful telescopes next year after the government declined to sign on as a member to the European Southern Observatory.
The decision not to pursue full membership at around $40 million annually was made as the Albanese government tries to squeeze more out of it’s investment in research and development amid a policy reset and tighter budget.
