Social media platforms and service providers like Meta and Google would need a licence to operate in Australia and be forced to fund an independent regulator under a radical shift the Albanese government has been asked to consider.
Some experts are backing the “overdue” proposal, which would replicate the licensing regimes for things like telecommunications, alcohol service, tradespeople and financial services.
Currently, the safety of online platforms is monitored by a government-funded regulator but key safety measures rely on voluntary codes and platforms do not require individual licences for almost all their activities.
