The government hasn’t done enough to rein in tech giants, according to independent and minor party senators, who warn that black box algorithms and a lack of enforceable rules will allow misinformation to flourish in an election year.
Their warnings come after Meta announced plans to end fact checking in the US and, likely, other markets.
The company initially declined to say how Australia would be impacted, but on Thursday evening a spokesperson said there would be “no changes” to local fact checking policy prior to the federal election.
