Failings trigger call to break up govt’s tech work

Large government technology projects should be broken up into smaller bundles of work and delivered in an agile way with sustainment and upgrade funding factored in from the start, according to a committee that dissected a series of Canberra tech wrecks.

While the audit committee reserved its final recommendations for incremental changes to procurement policy and guidance, its final report tabled Tuesday also urges a break from convention where possible.

It said the agile delivery model “could represent best practice” for large IT projects and there is benefit in tying funding to deliverables and products rather than an entire project.
