Gig Guide: Comms Alliance appoints Deena Shiff as new chair

Telco stalwart and founder of Telstra Ventures (now Titanium Ventures) Deena Shiff has been appointed independent chair of the Communications Alliance, commencing 1 July.

Ms Shiff, who replaces outgoing chair Michael Lee, said her tenure at the telecommunications body “comes at a pivotal time for the organisation, and for the telecommunications industry more broadly”.

Comms Alliance chief Luke Coleman referred to Ms Shiff’s long professional history in the telecommunications sector – including chairing the Australian Broadband Advisory Council the 2015 Regional Telecommunications Independent Review Committee and group managing director of Telstra Wholesale – saying the organisation “is fortunate to welcome her as our new chair.”

Mr Coleman also thanked Mr Lee for leading the Board “for a remarkable 15 years … [and] strong and stable presence as chair during a period of disruption for the Australian telecommunications sector”.

Luke Halliday has stepped down from his role as Victoria’s Department of Government Services (DGS) chief technology officer after three years. Mr Halliday joined Digital Victoria in 2022 and transitioned to the newly-formed DGS in 2023. In this role he was tasked with establishing the new department’s IT function, integrating teams from Service Victoria and Digital Victoria, and developing the state’s ICT strategy.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission has appointed Rob Whitfield to chair a panel to review the Australian Securities Exchange’s (ASX) governance.

Victorian Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action secretary John Bradley has resigned after eight years in the role, telling the state government he will leave the organisation in September. Minister for Climate Action Lily D’Ambriosio praised Mr Bradley for his “nation-leading  climate action, saying his leadership “helped transform the state, from recycling to water management and supporting self-determination for First Peoples.”

Net Zero Economy Authority chief David Shankey has appointed Professor Roy Green to lead the review of its Energy Industry Jobs Plan (EIJP) to meet the 12-month deadline under the Net Zero Economy Authority Act 2024. In his new role, Professor Green will assess the effectiveness of the EIJP on preparing employees for transition to new employment after the closure of coal-fired and gas-fired power stations.

Former Bendigo and Adelaide Bank chief executive Marnie Baker has joined the FinTech Australia board.

Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib has appointed a new Commissioner, Trent Curtin, to lead the NSW Rural Fire Service, replacing Rob Rogers on 14 July. Mr Curtin is currently the head of SafeWork NSW, following 30 years in emergency management in senior roles with Victoria and NSW, including assistant chief fire officer at the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, and assistant commissioner of fire safety at Fire and Rescue NSW.

Edith Cowan University has appointed Mike Laytham as chief information officer.
