Hydrogen fuel cell cars face an uphill battle in Australia with the government ruling out a major role for the technology in decarbonising the transport sector.

Released on Tuesday evening for consultation, a technology roadmap for decarbonising the transport sector says “electrification is the clear technology to decarbonise light vehicles”, which include passenger cars, SUVs, utes, and vans.

Hydrogen fuel cell cars “may not be a competitive long-term light vehicle decarbonisation solution due to its relatively low energy efficiency and the need to establish new refuelling infrastructure to support it”.
