Govt opened the innovation grant tap just before election

More than $36 million in federal innovation grants were quietly rolled out to startups and scaleups earlier this year with almost no fanfare, right on the eve of the 2025 election campaign.

The grants went to more than 20 deep tech companies working in areas like AI, drones, drug development, sensors, and critical minerals processing. One even went to a company commercialising “lightning as a service”.

But almost no public announcements were made about the latest Industry Growth Program (IGP) grant recipients, in contrast to the Albanese government’s approach both last year and earlier this year.
