Just a week after his appointment as the new Minister for Industry and Innovation, Tim Ayres took to the stage this week to set out his agenda – and he covered plenty of ground.
Science and the importance of backing Australia research institutions. Future Made in Australia. The ongoing root-and-branch review of R&D. It was all there.
But it was far from a “complete policy vision”, as the minister himself acknowledges and Dr John Howard later explored in his column for InnovationAus.com.
As for sovereign capability? It didn’t rate a mention, despite being added to the Industry department’s laundry list of responsibilities. Perhaps it doesn’t need to be.
Meanwhile, government tech procurement transparency is in the spotlight again, Victoria is setting up yet another investment fund, and Australia’s first orbital launch in 50 years is grounded.
And what does US President Donald Trump’s whirlwind trip to the Middle East have to do with plans to rescind and replace a Biden-era curb on AI chip exports that is favourable to Australia? Find out here.
In this episode of InnovationAus.com’s weekly News Wrap podcast, host James Riley and editor Justin Hendry talk through all the developments and other stories from the week.
