Changes to how NSW government agencies must use local suppliers or at least justify why not have hit early hurdles, while other procurement reforms promised more than two years ago are yet to get off the ground.
Finance and Procurement minister Courtney Houssos on Tuesday defended the policies, including the new ‘if not why’ rule that requires buyers to proactively identify local suppliers for work over $7.5 million and explain if the job goes out of state.
The change led to only three contracts going to local suppliers in the fist three months of 2025, Ms Houssos confirmed at an estimates hearing, after resisting NSW Parliament’s attempts to release the information earlier this year.
