New Zealand will consolidate its publicly-funded research institutes and set up a new one-stop shop for foreign direct investment as part of a major overhaul of its science and research sector.
The country’s seven Crown Research Institutes will become three Public Research Organisations (PRO) under the shake-up announced on Thursday, with government innovation agency Callaghan Innovation to be “dis-established” altogether.
A fourth PRO focused on advanced technologies like artificial intelligence, quantum computing and synthetic biology will also be created in a bid to “keep pace with technological advances”.
