Rapid developments in AI technology, policy and regulation are complicating Australia’s attempts to put guardrails on the technology. But Industry minister Ed Husic says the government will stay the course on its domestic rules to overcome a local trust gap and encourage responsible uptake.

The government is expected to announce a risk-based model for regulating AI soon, after more than 18 months of consultation.

“We are now in the final stages of developing what the shape of that regulatory response will be… We’ll harmonise where we can, and we’ll localise where we have to,” Mr Husic said on Tuesday.
