‘Persuasive rhetoric’: Pressure mounts on govt over age assurance

The Albanese government is facing calls to rethink its social media ban for under-16s after the final report from an independent age assurance trial revealed shortcomings with all of the technology approaches that have been tested.

With less than 100 days until the ban comes into effect, Communications minister Anika Wells on Monday released the long-awaited report from the trial that experts maintain was flawed.

The report, which includes 10 volumes that run to hundreds of pages each, found that age verification, age estimation and age inference are all technically feasible to bring about the ban, which starts on December 10.
