PM steers innovation fund to metals manufacturing

Almost half of the $1.7 billion Future Made in Australia Innovation Fund will be directed to manufacturing metals, the Prime Minister announced on Friday, just days after Australia was hit with US tariffs on steel and aluminium.

$750 million from the flagship grants fund announced in the last Budget will go to developing green metal technologies or funding pilot and demonstration projects to kickstart a commercial industry.

It comes after the government has already announced production credits for green aluminium, a green iron investment fund, and a rescue package for the Whyalla steelworks that was pursuing an electric furnace before being placed into administration.
