Online account takeover powers were used to fight terrorism for the first time last year, with the federal police using controversial identify and disrupt laws to secretly gather evidence.
The Australian Federal Police revealed in its annual report last month that terrorism offences were among those in which it was granted six ‘account takeover warrants’ in 2023-24.
The warrant, which have been available to the AFP and Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission since 2021, allows officers to gain control of a person’s online account to gather evidence about serious offences.
