‘Privacy washing’: Age assurance trial adviser speaks out

A privacy expert who advised on Australia’s age assurance technology trial has broken ranks to raise serious concerns about the methodology and conclusions, casting further doubt on the exercise.

As the government considers the trial’s final report, John Pane, the chair of Electronic Frontiers Australia, on Thursday became the latest member of the 20-person advisory board to challenge the preliminary findings of the independent trial.

He labeled the findings, which tested the viability of a range of technologies in preparation for the social media ban for under-16s later this year, as “difficult to reconcile with the evidence”.
