The future of a $200 million Queensland battery testing and innovation centre promised three years ago hangs in the balance after the Crisafulli state government pulled its half of the funding to back other industries.
With the centre now in doubt, advocates warn Australia could be left without a crucial capability to certify imported and locally made batteries or innovate with new materials and technologies.
The state funding cut came despite design work having been underway and leaves the Albanese government weighing an opportunity to carry on the plan with only the $100 million it committed in 2022.
