Queensland has launched a new accelerator program to support startups and SMEs developing technologies with applications across both the defence and mining equipment, technology and services sectors.

The QuantumTX Queensland METS and Defence Industries Accelerator will run over 12 weeks and provide $25,000 in support per participant.

Backed by the Queensland government, the program offers commercialisation mentoring, industry connections and training to help businesses scale dual-use solutions.

QuantumTX’s latest accelerator launches as the state government readies a new $180 million Sovereign Industry Development Fund aimed at building defence-sector capability and driving regional economic growth through dual-use innovation.

QuantumTX was founded by Peter Rossdeutscher, who earlier this year was appointed chair of Industry Innovation and Science Australia.

He said there is “extraordinary potential” in the cross over of Defence, resources and mining equipment, technology and services (METS).

“[They are] significant industries that thrive on innovation that improves productivity, safety, supply chain, and operations,” Mr Rossdeutscher said.

Australia’s METS sector is estimated to generate more than $92 billion annually and exports to over 150 countries.

The growing sector and new government commitments to over $330 billion in defence spending in the next decade offers a crossover opportunity for new ventures.

The QuantumTX accelerator seeks to address shared challenges across the industries, such as autonomy, mobility, resilience and infrastructure.

Program director Kylah Morrison said late-stage researchers were also encouraged to apply for an opportunity to commercialise with industry.

“Prominent companies in all major Queensland sectors support QuantumTX with a particular focus on new and innovative solutions from the regions and from our First Nations people,” she said.

QuantumTX says it has supported more than 140 alumni, resulting in over 520 jobs, $40 million in investment raised, $45 million in revenue growth, and contracts with global mining and industrial leaders.

Applications for the 2025 Queensland accelerator are now open until 23 September, with the program running from October to December and a showcase event scheduled for early December.
