Defence Minister Richard Marles says Australia needs to pursue military “self-reliance” rather than “self-sufficiency”, balancing investment in new sovereign defence capabilities and industries and its commitments to partners like the United States.
Mr Marles in a speech to the National Press Club on Thursday announced a record uplift for Australia’s defence budget, which he said would be used to strengthen Australia’s defence industrial base while maintaining international commitments through AUKUS.
