Senate to probe youth social media ban

Liberal and Nationals senators have sided with the Greens to set up a parliamentary probe into the federal government’s social media ban for under-16s and search engine age verification.

The Senate this week voted in favour of the inquiry in response to growing concerns over the privacy implications of mass age-checking, as the government considers the final report from its age assurance technology trial.

A motion moved by Greens Senator David Shoebridge was carried with 38 votes in favour and 24 against on Wednesday, securing the Environment and Communications References Committee probe.
