Controversial social media platform X is seeking an eleventh-hour delay to Australia’s social media age ban, claiming it could violate human rights and the company has not had enough time to prepare age assurance technologies.

The Elon Musk-owned platform this week told lawmakers it was not given a chance to provide feedback on the ‘reasonable steps’ platforms must take to keep under-16-year-olds of X and it needs more time to prepare for the December 10 start date.

The guidance was released last week, offering a principles-based way for companies like X, Meta and TikTok to comply with a layered mix of methods and technologies.
