Stunted govt data sharing scheme to be ‘stripped back’, opened up

The federal government’s ambitious data sharing scheme failed to ever get going and must be overhauled, a draft review has found, paving the way for more entities to enter the regime under looser rules.

The proposed changes in the draft review could see the private sector and some compliance activity allowed in, despite these being explicitly excluded in the current legislation.

The call for major reforms comes ahead of a planned sunsetting of the troubled Data Availability and Transparency Act (DATA), signalling a likely second chance as the government searches for productivity drivers.
