Tech giants step up opposition to digital competition regime


Big Tech giants have ratcheted up opposition to Australia’s proposed digital competition regime under the cover of the Albanese government’s productivity push, arguing the new rules will hurt business dynamism.

A new report commissioned by Apple on Friday warns against a broad-brush ex ante regulation pioneered by the European Union at a time when other countries are adopting a ‘wait and see’ approach.

It comes just weeks after Amazon, in its submission to the Productivity Commission’s five pillars of productivity inquiries, urged the government to reconsider its proposal and take advantage of light-touch regulation.
