Universities will be legally required to screen research projects’ risk to “national interest” for the first time under new efforts to protect against espionage and knowledge theft or misappropriation in more complex geopolitical circumstances.
The clampdown comes through an update to Australia’s Foreign Arrangements Scheme that sailed through Parliament on Thursday, placing additional obligations on universities to manage the risks down to individual researcher relationships.
