Australian scientists will co-develop electronics and materials in Sydney for a global quantum giant that is racing to build the world’s most powerful quantum computer by the end of the decade.

The tie-up between new local R&D outfit Emergence Quantum and IonQ was announced late on Thursday just weeks after the US company revealed it is buying a UK chip innovator for $1.5 billion and had pulled in $1 billion more from investors.

Emergence Quantum experts will now co-develop crucial components to enable IonQ’s trapped ion approach to quantum computing, supporting an aggressive timeline for utility quantum computing.
