Work has begun on a voluntary labelling scheme designed to help consumers better understand the cybersecurity risks associated with smart devices and push manufacturers towards adopting more secure-by-design practices.

IoT Alliance Australia, the peak industry body for the Internet of Things, will co-design and implement the Smart Devices Labelling Scheme, which forms part of the federal government’s 2023–2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy.

It will work with manufacturers, distributors, consumer groups and international standards bodies until March 2027 to design the scheme for consumer-grade IoT devices like smart speakers, electronic doorbells and robot vacuums.
