Productivity tsar hoses down sovereign AI support hopes

The Productivity Commission says artificial intelligence will be as transformative electricity, the internal combustion engine and the Internet, but is not convinced sovereign AI development should be targeted by government for industry support.

In her address to the National Press Club on Monday, Productivity Commission chair Danielle Wood said the focus should be on removing regulatory impediments that might be standing in the way of the domestic industry.

This could include the issue of exemptions being made in copyright law to enable AI models to be trained or changes to planning regulations that would allow faster roll-out of data centres.
