Blast off: SERD proposes radical mission style innovation

A root and branch review of Australia’s R&D system has proposed channelling it into a handful of “focus areas” with multi-decade horizons like energy and health, while backing it with long-term government investment and coordination around ambitious goals.

The bold mission style approach was put forward in a new policy paper released Wednesday by the Strategic Examination of Research and Development (SERD), which has heard Australia’s system is currently too fragmented to deliver scale and impact.

The new model would see five or fewer focus areas developed by experts and agreed by Cabinet for the reformed research, development & innovation (RD&I) system to pull towards.
