R&D review panel sketches out plan to ‘translate ideas’

Tax breaks for companies undertaking research and development would be simplified and reworked to “encourage scale” under changes being contemplated to jump-start Australia’s R&D system.

The panel leading the Strategic Examination of Research and Development (SERD) is also considering new business-led programs focused on areas of national importance, as well as changes to procurement rules and migration reforms.

The proposals are among several included in the latest SERD issues paper, released for consultation without fanfare this week following an initial paper on coordinating national research, development & innovation (RD&I) impact.
