Australia’s trial of age assurance technology used a “mystery shopping” company that tried to recruit its own staff to test options like facial and voice analysis, according to insiders’ private complaint to government midway through the project.
The complaint came from DIGI, the industry group representing platform companies like Google and Meta, and which acted as an adviser on the trial. It was made midway through the trial in April with a warning not to rely on its results.
DIGI complained there were “serious” problems and conflicts of interest in the trial, which constrained it accuracy and rushed the results.
